Many of you may not know this, but I am a descendant of the original inhabitants of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.
The women of my family from there were known for being tall and dark, with green and sometimes lavender eyes.
We were surely infused with mermaid spirit, having spent lifetimes staring out over the waters and feeling the mystery of the sea move through us.

I’ve already discussed my family and our deep connection to the waters of Ocracoke. I’m the last of a long line of women all named Julia who lived by the sea.
